African Gap Year is designed to be a resource freely available to all students who wish to explore the possibility of taking a gap, either between school and further studies, or between school and work. We believe that South Africans do not fully know or appreciate the wide range of activities and experiences that are available. Foreign gappers, on the other hand, choose South Africa as one of their top destinations when planning a gap year.

So if you are a teacher, or work with high school students, we encourage you to use this website and promote it to your students:

• to stimulate their thinking and their creativity in getting to grips with the concept of a gap after school or university/college
• to help them realise that a year is a small period of time in relation to their lives, and that employers are increasingly looking at what potential employees have accomplished and experienced outside of the formal education system
• to expose them to the options available to young, independent people
• to let them know that life is not pre-destined, and that if they design their lives they can become all they are capable of becoming
