Here is some basic advice prior to your trip to Africa:
If you are using prescription drugs get enough supplies to last your entire trip (in their original container in your carry-on luggage). There are many world-class pharmacies in South Africa, but it is sensible to bring your own.
  1. It is recommended that you talk to your health care provider regarding the necessity for vaccinations such as for Hepatitus A and B, rabies, and typhoid. No vaccinations are required by the South African authorities.
  2. If you are coming from or via South America or Sub-Saharan Africa it is recommended that you are vaccinated for Yellow Fever. Immigration officials do check for the necessary documentation, so do not take a chance!

  • Visas are required for some countries. If you are a resident of the United Kingdom you do not need a visa.
  • Your passport must be valid for a sufficient period to cover the intended stay, and it is recommended that you have two clean pages available for immigration stamps.
  • You must have sufficient funds for your stay and a return / onward ticket.
  • Yellow fever certificates are required if the journey starts or entails passing through the yellow fever belt of Africa or South America.

South Africa has a fairly extensive network of cellular networks, with most towns and cities having reliable connections to GPRS and 3G technologies. There are 5 cellular providers at present – Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Neotel and Virgin Mobile.

You can choose between prepaid options (where you use your own phone and buy a ‘Pay as You Go’ starter pack, and you get a sim card onto which you can load airtime when and as you need it); and a contract (where you enter into a 24 month contract, choose a specific cell phone (which is free) and you receive a specified number of seconds or minutes of peak or off-peak airtime per month, sometimes with extras thrown in).
